Few foods photograph with as much personality as a great pizza—and few are as easy to get wrong. Light it flat and the cheese looks rubbery; rush the shot and the crust loses its glow. In a feed full of look-alike pies, the difference between a scroll and a craving comes down to craft. A pizza is also a promise: the slice on the plate has to match the one that stopped the scroll, so the photograph has to be as honest as it is appetizing.
That's where we come in. Our session at Lorenzo's Italian Kitchen was an absolute delight, working alongside Shelley from The Media Den and Erik, the proprietor, whose pride in his food showed in every detail. Shelley's innate styling talents brought precision to the table, and together we built frames that celebrate the simple things done right.
We moved in close on a classic pepperoni pizza—dozens of cupped pepperoni crisped at the edges and pooled with rendered oil, blistered cheese pulled corner to corner, flecks of herb and a little char from the oven. We lit the surface to gleam without going greasy, holding onto every bubble and ripple so you can almost smell it coming out of the kitchen.
Coaxing that mouthwatering shine—and knowing the brief window when a hot pizza is at its absolute peak before the cheese sets—comes from years behind the camera with chefs and stylists who care about the details as much as we do.
